9. Victory Garden 8915 S. Exchange

Victory Garden, 8915 S. Exchange Avenue

This garden, begun in 1997 to honor Arnold Mireles, a community activist murdered for his dedication to ridding the community of slum landlords, has been developed into a vegetable garden and orchard by Master Gardener, Gregory Bratton, the Arnold Mireles Academy Green Team, led by Mrs. LaJuana Jackson, and other volunteers.

Each year, on October 31st, Arnold’s birthday is celebrated here, commemorating a victory over negative influences on the community’s quality of life.
