18. Hoxie Prairie Garden

Hoxie Prairie Garden, 10549 S. Hoxie Avenue

In 2003, the Hoxie Avenue Block Club, working with the Open Lands Project and a grant from the United States Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service, turned five lots, vacant since 1972, into a native prairie garden.

Over the next few years, a number of improvements were added: a wrought iron fence, crushed stone patio and pathways, a barbecue grill, a tool shed, a handicapped access path, and decorative benches, as well as artwork obtained through funding from the Marwen Foundation.

Community organizations and businesses help to support the garden, which is available for use by residents.  Site manager, Enrique Gonzalez, works and plans with neighbors to improve facilities at this oasis.
